Chevrolet Aveo

The new Chevrolet Aveo is a five door hatchback, with the rear door handle incorporated into the rear quarter window frame “a la Alfa Romeo” to give that sporty coupe look. The headlamps and tail lamps have no outer covering. Instead they are intended to look like separate individual lamps, each with their own individual lens and with a black filling around them. Buyers will be offered the choice of three trim and equipment levels, starting with the LS and moving up through LT to the LTZ.
There is a choice of two petrol engines and a 1.3 litre diesel in three levels of tune. The petrol range starts with a 1.2 litre, 4 cylinder, delivering 63 kW and 115 Nm. This engine comes with a five speed manual gearbox and offers a top speed of 172 kph (107 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 13.6 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is claimed to be 60 mpg (4.7 lt/100 km), with exhaust emissions of 111 gm/km. The 1.4 litre unit, produces 74 kW and 130 Nm. It comes with a five speed manual as standard, but buyers also have the option of a six speed automatic. The manual version has a top speed of 173 kph (108 mph) with 0-100 kph in 12.2 seconds, while the automatic manages 175 kph (109 mph) and 13.1 seconds. Exhaust emissions are 125 gm/km and 147 gm/km respectively. The petrol engines have a twin overhead cam design with four valves per cylinder, plus variable valve timing and operate with a 10.5 : 1 compression ratio.
The 1.3 litre diesel has a variable vane turbocharger, with intercooling, direct fuel injection and Stop/Start as standard. It is linked to a six speed manual transmission. It is offered in two levels of tune, 55 kW/190 Nm and 70 kW/210 Nm. The 55 kW version has a top speed of 162 kph (101 mph) and 0-100 kph in 14.2 seconds, while the more powerful 70 kW version manages 173 kph (108 mph) and 12.6 seconds. Exhaust emissions are 99 gm/km and 108 gm/km respectively. In addition there is an Eco version of the 70 kW diesel, giving 190 Nm. Its top speed is 173 kph (108 mph), with 0-100 kph in 11.7 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 78 mpg (3.6 lt/100 km) with exhaust emissions of 95 gm/km. Thus, apart from the 1.4 petrol powered models, all versions fall into Irish road tax band A, with a current annual charge of 160 euro. The 1.4 manual is in Irish road tax band B, with a current annual charge of 225 euro, while the 1.4 automatic is in Irish road tax band C with a current annual charge of 330 euro.

Chevrolet say that the internal styling has been influenced by the Corvette, with the central console sweeping down between the two front seats. The instrument panel, with its titanium coloured finish, flows into the doors on either side, giving that wrap-around feeling. The round analogue speedometer is modelled on that found in motorcycle design. It has a digital information panel alongside. The silver metallic finish on the lower spoke and the leatherette covering on the rest of the steering wheel, as seen in the picture above, is standard on the top LTZ specification.
In the modern manner, depending on the specification level, the audio system comes with four or six speakers. It includes USB and iPod connectivity, plus Bluetooth facilities for hands free mobile telephone operation. Controls are duplicated on the instrument panel and the steering wheel. Instrument panel lighting is an ice blue.
When all seats are in use, the luggage compartment provides 0.290 cubic metres of space. This increases to 0.653 cubic meters when only two seats are required and the 60/40 split rear seats are folded.
Front suspension is based on the well proven MacPherson strut design, with an anti-roll bar. At the rear a torsion beam is used. Standard equipment on all versions includes anti-lock brakes with emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, plus an electronic stability programme. Steering is by an electronic power assisted system. All models also have cruise control, with a speed limiter function.
