Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCi AWD

The Ford Kuga comes in both two and four wheel drive versions. The test car was fitted with the all wheel drive transmission. From a driving point of view it is a very pleasant and satisfying car, as being that bit higher you have a better view of the traffic ahead and all around. This naturally applies equally to both two and four wheel drive versions. The 2.0 litre diesel engine in the test car was smooth and quiet with ample power whenever required. It was coupled to a six speed manual transmission with a smooth and precise gearchange. The ride was smooth and comfortable, with good grip and roadholding, over a variety of different road surfaces, from narrow twisting country lanes to straight fast modern motorways. I never got the opportunity to go off-road, nor was the climate such as to provide wet, icy or otherwise challenging road surfaces, but in those conditions I have no doubt I would have welcomed the added grip and traction provided by the all wheel drive. In fact the Kuga with all wheel drive impressed me as being a very safe and practical, everyday family car. I would be more than happy to have one in my driveway on a permanent basis.

The four cylinder, direct injection, turbocharged, intercooled, diesel engine in the test car delivered 103 kW @ 3,750 rpm, with 320 Nm between 2,000 and 3,250 rpm. This gave it a potential top speed of 184 kph (114 mph), which is well above the national speed limits in most countries in Europe. Of more significance, from a daily driving point of view, 0-100 kph acceleration takes just 10.4 seconds. That is very much in the sporty segment of the performance graph.
From a practical point of view, it can tow braked caravans/trailers of up to 2100 kg, or unbraked trailers of up to 750 kg. The only downside to towing, is the fact that the Kuga came with a Spacesaver spare wheel, which is unsuitable for towing. It can also carry up to 75 kg on the roof rails, which are part of the standard equipment. When all five seats are in use, luggage capacity is 0.360 cubic metres, which can be expanded to a maximum of 1.355 cubic metres, when the rear seats are folded and you load to the roof.
Fuel consumption, measured by EU testing standards is 37 mpg (7.6 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, stretching to 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle and averaging 47 mpg (6.0 lt/100 km) on the Combined cycle. That level of consumption gives exhaust emissions of 159 gm/km, putting the Kuga in Irish road tax band D, with a current annual charge of Euro 448. That is not bad by 4x4 standards.
If you are thinking of going seriously off-road, the Kuga has an approach angle of 21 degrees, departure angle of 25 degrees and a breakover angle of 14 degrees. It can wade through water 450 mm in depth. Ground clearance is 157 mm when fully loaded and 180 mm unloaded. The six speed gearbox has just the one standard set of ratios, there is no set of low ratios for serious off-road driving.

An interesting feature is the rear luggage door. It is divided into two sections horizontally. Thus if you want to put in a small item, without opening the full door, you can open the upper half, leaving the lower section in place. For loading large items you simply open the whole door.

The spare wheel is stored in a well below the luggage floor. There is a black polystyrene tray alongside, divided into sections, which is handy for storing small items. The jack and wheel changing tools are stored in a section of this polystyrene tray.
The passenger compartment was attractive and well laid out. Although the main interior colour was black, there were a number of silver and light coloured trimmings to give it a welcoming ambience. The steering wheel adjusted for both reach and height and the two front seats were reach and height adjustable with reclining backrests, enabling most people to find a comfortable position. The rear bench seat had ISOfix fittings for child safety seats in the two outer positions.

The instruments and driving controls are laid out for comfort and ease of use. Indeed the Kuga has one of the best instrument panels I have come across in recent times. The main instrument binnacle is directly in front of the driver. It houses four analogue instruments and a digital information panel. All the analogue instruments have white lettering on black backgrounds with red needles and red highlights where necessary. The large instrument on the left is the tachometer. From zero to five the markings are in white, while from 5 to six they are in red. The large matching instrument on the left is the speedometer. All its graduations are in white, but the background also houses red warning lights when necessary. The small gauge on the upper left indicates engine temperature, while the one on the upper right is the fuel level indicator. The digital information panel provides a variety of selectable information in red lettering.
The centre of the facia is dominated by the silver audio system. It is large and easy to see. There are further audio associated controls on the steering wheel. Included in the steering wheel mounted switches are the cruise control. The smaller panel below the main audio control unit looks after the heating and ventilation. The driver’s door armrest has the switches for the four electric windows, plus the controls for the adjustment of the exterior rear view mirrors. A circular switch on the right hand side of the facia, below the air vent operates the headlamps and fog lights. The padded armrest, between the two front seat backrests opens to give access to a large storage box. Ahead of this, behind the gearlever, there are two cupholders in the top of the centre tunnel.
